Capturing Grassroots Football with Manchester United Academy & Sir Tom Finney FC

Last month, I was in Preston on a Wednesday night to cover something a bit special: a visit from Manchester United’s Academy to train with Sir Tom Finney Football Club.

The weather held out (always a win), and the Academy brought eight of their top U18 players to take on a range of teams from across the club; boys and girls aged 5 to 15.

The Brief

My brief was to capture a handful of photos and a short video for the club’s social media. Nothing too staged, just real moments, energy, and connection. (My favourite type of content capture!)

The lads got properly stuck in, running drills and playing matches with the younger ones, although the girls’ teams definitely gave them a run for their money! There were plenty of great moments to capture, especially the interactions and laughs between players.

Action & Interviews

As part of the evening, I also filmed a short interview with Academy Liaison Officer Dave Bushell, which added a nice bit of context for the video.

Photos were delivered to the client within the week, with the video following shortly after.

My Process
When working with children, I always ensure that photo permissions are obtained ahead of time and that I’m clear on where I can and cannot be.

A long lens helps me stay out of the way while still getting close-up, natural shots from the sidelines, which keeps things respectful and relaxed for everyone involved.
